Best Apple Crop in 50 Years

The branches are touching the ground, they’re so loaded with apples.  After two years of small crops because of frost, the trees are making up for it.  The hot summer days helped excellent flavor develop in the apples, and cool nights improve the color.  Jonathan, Gold Delicious and 13 other varieties are ripening at Centennial Farms.

On August 27 and 28 you can pick Jonathan, Gala and Ruby Jon.  Pick your own apples are priced by the pound, $1.90 a pound, the same as last year.

Hours at the farm are 9:00 – 500 on Saturday and Sunday.

Honey, apple butter and preserves, all made at the farm, are available in the market.  The playground has been expanded.  Hayrides will start in September.  With all the improvements at the farm and other factors there will be an admission charge of $5.00 for all over 3 years old that are picking apples. This charge will start in September.

Pick-Your-Own Apples Starting August 20

Blackberries are finished and Centennial Farms will be closed this weekend, Aug. 13 – 14.  We will have the best apple crop in years and will start pick your own with Gala and Ruby Jon on Sat, Aug. 20.  Jonathan, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious are usually ripe a week later.  We have expanded our playground with a bounce pad and giant spiderweb.  In September and October we will also be offering hayrides.  With these additional features plus other factors, we will be charging admission in September and October, $3.00 for adults and $5.00 for children.  There will be no admission charge in August. Apple butter, preserves, honey and salsa will be available in the market.

Last of the Summer Blackberries

There are still good blackberries for picking but July 30-31 will be the last weekend for blackberries. The heat and drought have shortened the season this year. 200 Year Celebration

Centennial Farms was featured this week in an article in the Washington Missourian. This September marked the 200th anniversary of the founding of the farm, which has been in the Knoernschild Family since 1854.

For over 50 years, this has been Ellen Knoernschild’s weekend routine for more than half of the year. However, this year marks a special milestone for her and her family. Sept. 24, 2021, was the 200th anniversary of the family’s farm, Centennial Farms. The farm has been both an economic means and treasured heirloom for seven generations of Knoernschilds since the 1850s.
